The Aging Face: Enhance your Beauty with Dermal Fillers

As we age, we lose facial volume through deflation of soft tissues like fat-pads. Additionally, our skin is impacted by many factors including genetics, lifestyle choices, and changes influenced by aging. Gravity and loss of collagen/moisture/elastin contributes to sagging of the skin and tissues. We start to notice less definition and contour of the cheekbones and jawline that are characteristic of youth, and in its place, develop less-aesthetically pleasing attributes like flattened cheeks, deepening folds and wrinkles, loss of lip volume and projection, jowling, and fullness between the neck and chin.

Facial volume loss overall leads to a more “deflated” look; this is where dermal fillers come in! Dermal fillers are injectable facial fillers used to smooth facial wrinkles, enhance specific facial features, and restore that volume loss caused by aging. They are composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that our body produces to volumize and hydrate the skin. The goal with facial fillers is to provide facial balancing and rejuvenation that creates a more restored appearance and youthful result while still looking natural and appropriate for each individual.

There are many different hyaluronic acid fillers on the market that have been FDA approved for certain areas. At edit., some of the most common fillers we use for facial rejuvenation are among the JUVÉDERM® line, which includes several different filler compositions utilized for different areas of the face or to achieve different outcomes. These products are safe and have proven to deliver beautiful results over and over again. They may be used for many different areas of the face including cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, chin, lips, jawline,  etc. At your appointment, the provider will conduct a thorough full-facial assessment and will discuss a recommended, individualized treatment plan with you. While a client may be initially driven to make a filler appointment due to their concern with heavy jowls or worsening of nasolabial folds for example, that may actually be caused by lack of volume in the midface/cheeks, and in that case, the provider would encourage restoration of that area before adding volume to the lower face to ensure balance and natural results. Each client is different and may require one or multiple syringes of fillers for a correction that is desirable, but most often, more than one syringe is recommended. In one full syringe of JUVÉDERM® dermal filler, there is 1ml of product. To help clients understand the volume, we explain that 1ml or one syringe is ⅕ of a teaspoon! So when you are thinking about how many syringes your provider is recommending for facial rejuvenation, keep that in mind, that one syringe does not necessarily go very far. Precise placement and technique of the injector is imperative to achieve the best results. At edit., we treat conservatively and prioritize a natural enhancement. We achieve this by doing a little bit at a time, often over multiple sessions. Look at your aesthetic transformation as an investment in you; a journey, rather than a one-and-done appointment.
